Day 11 - Walk from Newquay to Perranporth

Breakfast this day didn't start until 9:00 AM, and we stopped on the way out of town for sandwiches and other errands on the way, so we really didn't start walking until around 10:00 AM. The rain had stopped overnight, but it was still a cloudy and gray day.

We walked down the road toward what was marked on the map as a ferry. It turned out that the ferry boat, pictured, only operated when there was water over the low-water bridge. Then we had a considerable walk along Crantock Beach to regain the path.

We continued on pass a delightful field with poppies, until we got to Holywell, where we stopped at a restaurant for lunch and coffee. We tried to shortcut through the old military Penhale Camp, but it was closed off, so we backtracked a couple of hundred yards to the main path, and continued on. Once past the camp with its impressive buildings and radio antenna structures, we walked the path above the very long Perran Beach, perhaps two miles, to Perranporth, where we found all sorts of beach activities in progress on a very gray and cool day. There were numerous surfers wearing wetsuits in the 53-degree water, as well as a beach volleyball tournament in progress. None of us would have found the beach an attractive destination on such a day, but I guess the English are a hardy folk accustomed to the weather in what is alleged to be summer here.

There was also a dog involved in a chase with some seagulls. The dogs chased the gulls, and then the gulls chased the dog. They were all obviously having a lot of fun!

We continued on through town for about a mile to the very excellent Saint Georges Country House. The house is large and comfortable, operated by two ladies who are both wonderful cooks. They fixed dinner for us, with a fixed two-course menu. The entree was fish pie, which I had on three previous occasions, but this one was the best I had ever had! It had several kinds of fish, as well as shrimp, mussels, potatos, and spinach. It was wonderful, and they made a special one for Tristan, who is allergic to shellfish. Dessert was a delightful chocolate cheesecake, or panna cotta, both of which we excellent, and a cheeseboard, with several different cheeses. The opinion was unanimous that this was our best meal of the trip.

The adventure continues!
