Day Two - Clovelly to Hartland Quay

Please remember each picture is a link to a larger version.

The streets in Clovelly are narrow, and steep. There is no parking in the village itself, so residents must park above the village. They use wooden sleds to transport groceries and other items down to the houses, over cobblestone streets. I expect they develop strong legs...

We were mostly walking along cliff tops 400 to 500 feet above the water this day, but often had to descend to cross streams, and then climb back up. Today's walk was about 11.6 miles, with perhaps 2500 feet of elevation gain and loss, the equivalent to climbing the stairs of a 125 story building, and then walking back down.

Hartland Quay in the distance

The last two nights, in Clovelly and Hartland Quay, we have stayed in hotels built long ago, but they have been comfortable if not lavish. We have eaten in the hotels, and the food has been very good. The days are long at this latitude, with the sun rising a few minutes after 5:00 AM, and setting after 9:00 PM.

Friday we will walk to Morwenstow, a relatively short walk of about 8 miles, and take a taxi back to Hartland Quay, there being no place to stay in Morwenstow. The weather has been perfect, but there is a chance of rain today. The weather forecast changes frequently, so we are always carrying rain gear. Along the ocean, there is always some chance of what is sometimes called a "seabreeze shower", when there is so much moisture in the air, it just falls out.

Onward.
