Day Three - Hartland Quay to Morwenstow

Please remember each picture is a link to a larger version.

We had rain early this morning - heavy enough that we put on our rain jackets, but not pants. But it was no barrier to enjoying the walk, as the color contrast was wonderful, and the flowers still beautiful. My iPhone is in a Lifeproof case, so I can use it to take pictures in the rain, when I would not wish to expose my normal camera.

We had lunch in the hut shown in the picture, which was used by playwrite Ronald Duncan to write during summers. After his death, the hut was rebuilt as a hiker's shelter. It is locked at night, and one cannot camp in it, but it's a wonderful shelter during bad weather.

There was a question on one of my Facebook posts about the vertical elevations we have encountered. Today we did about 5200 vertical feet, the equivalent of climbing stairs of a 260-story building, and then walking back down. Going down is harder than going up, as one has to maintain balance to avoid a fall, and one uses muscles differently when walking down.

At the end of the day in Morwenstow, we found a wonderful English tea room next to the parish church, and has a delightful tea, with scones, clotted cream, and marmalade.

The church dates to the time of the Magna Carta, about 1215. It has a Norman arch at the entrance, and the ceiling vault is made of wood. It's a wonderful place. We caught a taxi back to Hartland Quay, as there were no accomodations in Morwenstow. I was picked up there by my friend Terry Hibben, who has been to Rifles Only several times, and we met his wife for dinner near Bude. It was wonderful to reconnect with an old friend, and to meet his wife.

I was awakened at about 2:30 AM by the sound of waves pounding the Quay, as the wind had picked up substantially, then went back to sleep.
